Color Picker for Photoshop That Lets You See Hues on 3D Shapes Before Painting Them

Chroma Space from ColgArt is a Photoshop panel with a real-time 3D viewport for previewing colors on 3D elements before applying them.

Chroma Space from ColgArt is a 3D color picker for Photoshop that allows you to preview any color on a lit 3D shape, in light and shadow, before applying it. It minimizes the risk of ending up with muddy, lifeless colors in the scene, as this CEP extension shows them in real time in a 3D viewport. The real-time three-dimensional view is a WebGL renderer built on Three.js.

The 3D color picker uses physically based shading for color representation. "Image-based environment lighting is rebuilt from the sky, horizon, and ground colors, so reflections and bounce light follow the colors you pick," developers explain. You can also compare the lit scene with the unlit local color on a neutral gray background.

Chroma Space features a two-way sync with Photoshop's foreground and background. The eyedropper reads the rendered 3D view, meaning that you can sample a highlight or shadow off the lit object and paint with it. The tool throttles its lighting updates without overloading the GPU, sharing it with Photoshop instead.

With the Pro version, you can also pick the desired time of day for a more accurate color representation by using a slider to move the sky and shadow color. Plus, it allows you to add materials like Depth Fog, Reflectivity, Toon Shading, and others.

"Chroma Space started with a painter's problem. It's hard to judge a color until you see it next to other colors, and in a painting that means a lot of back and forth before a color works. A normal picker shows a flat swatch. Chroma Space puts the color on a 3D shape lit by sky, sun, and bounce light, so you can see its highlight, core shadow, and reflected light before it goes on the canvas," developers state.

Chroma Space works offline, and it only needs an internet connection to activate the tool and check the license monthly. The cost starts at $29 for the Basic plan. It's not a subscription-based tool, meaning you only have to pay once to use it.
