In early 2025, the Substance 3D team invited Matthias Schmidt to create a Signature Collection, following the launch of the Substance 3D Assets library for all subscribers. Previously, we highlighted similar collections by Niki Marinov and Anna Koroleva.
With the theme set, Matthias aimed to capture a variety of planetary scales, from massive worlds to smaller celestial bodies. The collection features an assortment of planets, moons, tiling surface materials, and an asteroid atlas, encompassing the full range of objects within a star system. For the planets, he developed two distinct asset types: 2D representations, ideal for UI elements or skybox/background objects in sci-fi environments, and equirectangular materials, designed for precise projection onto 3D spheres, as seen in games like Kerbal Space Program.
In this blog post, Matthias Schmidt offers insights into Procedural Planetarium, detailing his approach and the challenges he encountered.
