The intermediate-level tutorial by Jean-Michel Bihorel shows how to generate complex-looking trees.
Check out the tutorial by Jean-Michel Bihorel – Generalist and Look-Dev Lighting Supervisor – on how to create high-resolution complex-looking trees using SpeedTree and Houdini. The intermediate-level tutorial starts from simple generating rules and then moves to more advanced areas of tree generation.
In the tutorial, Bihorel teaches how to create a hero tree asset suitable for use in a cinematic. He shares how to create hand-drawn branches extended by procedural generators, how to use the mesh forces for realistic results, how to set up and export a leaf as a point cloud in Houdini, how to get great procedural control over the leaf geometry generation and placement based on the direction of the sun, and much more.
Aside from Houdini, the artist shows how to export your trees into other software.
The three and a half hours tutorial is available in the Gnomon Workshop, the subscription to which costs $49/month or $490/year.
