Cuphead Studio Director: "Who Cares" If a Game Gets Delayed?

Studio MDHR's Maja Moldenhauer shared that she didn't mind the Cuphead DLC long delay as the employee's well-being is the studio's number one priority.

In a recent interview with IGN, the executive producer and studio director at Studio MDHR Maja Moldenhauer spoke about the crunch culture and explained why the developer repeatedly delayed the release of Cuphead's long-awaited expansion, The Delicious Last Course.

Moldenhauer shared that she believes that the psychological state of employees should always come first, especially during a pandemic. She noted that, as mental health is the studio's number one priority, in fact, she doesn't even really care that the game's release may be postponed.

"Mental health needed to be at the forefront, taking the space and time that you needed, especially over the last two years," she said. "We're like, ‘If it takes longer for the game to come out, it takes longer. Who cares?’"

Moldenhauer explained that the developers came to this conclusion when discussing their previous jobs. They didn't want to repeat past mistakes in the new studio and had a strong desire to do better. She also added that the commercial success wasn't the main focus of the studio – it was already enough to create an excellent game without sacrificing the staff's health.

"If we're going to risk it all, it's going to be a company that we're proud of. It's going to be a company that is all the things, an amalgamation of all the things we've always ever wanted. Respect for each other, love and support. Things that we didn't receive in our past jobs," Moldenhauer noted.

Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course was announced back in 2018 and initially was slated for release in 2019. The studio, however, delayed the launch a few times – first, to avoid crunch and later because of the pandemic.

The DLC will release on June 30 and will be available for Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Microsoft Windows.
