Cyberpunk 2077 Expansion Will Be CDPR's Last Project on REDengine

Cyberpunk 2077 will seemingly get only one expansion.

CD Projekt CEO Adam Kiciński has apparently revealed that Cyberpunk 2077 will receive only one expansion.

During a recent financial Q&A session, Kiciński was asked about the company's initial experience with Unreal Engine which CD Project is using for the next Witcher game and whether it's right to use two game engines: Unreal and its proprietary REDengine.

The head of the company replied that the upcoming expansion for Cyberpunk will be the last project powered by REDengine. After that, CD Projekt RED will start working with Unreal Engine 5.

"Cyberpunk expansion is the last product based on REDengine. Any further product will be Unreal. So starting from, I mean, which are – next, whichever is on Unreal and next products will be on Unreal and Unreal fits to our needs," Kiciński said.

CD Projekt is yet to give direct confirmation that Cyberpunk 2077 will receive only one expansion. However, Kiciński's words imply that this might be true. Earlier in 2022, the company also began to refer to the upcoming story-driven DLC as the "expansion" singular instead of the plural.

The company first announced the expansion in late 2021 periodically giving the audience updates on the development progress. Earlier this year, quest director Pawel Sasko assured the fans that CD Projekt will keep supporting and updating Cyberpunk 2077 and was actively working on the promised major DLC. The studio also provided the fans with a release window of 2023 in April 2022.
