Cyberpunk 2077 Quest Director Explains the Reasons Behind Cut Content
"If something is unused, this is done for a reason."
Like many video games, Cyberpunk 2077 had some content cut during development. One prominent instance that fans probably know about is the game's train system, which CD Projekt RED had decided not to include in the final release.
One of the game's key developers, quest director Paweł Sasko, has recently tried to explain why studios in general and CDPR specifically tend to eliminate content during the development process.
During one of his live streams on Twitch, Sasko, who frequently engages with fans and responds to their questions, brought up the topic of unused content. As spotted by PCGamesN, a viewer asked the game designer about the elements that were removed from Cyberpunk 2077.
Sasko emphasized that he consistently tries to convey to both players and the media that during the game development process, it is the responsibility of game designers to determine which elements are ultimately incorporated into the game.
According to Sasko, developers must constantly assess the quality of the content and decide whether it meets the same standards as the majority of the quests and elements already included in the game. This is where the process of cutting features begins.
"Unused content is unused for a reason," Sasko said. "When the quality is not there, you can see that there’s no way to bring it up to [the same quality as another of] the nine out of ten quests, or locations, or gameplay features. I think it’s really important to remember this, if something is unused, this is done for a reason."
He further added that CDPR's goal is delivering the best possible gaming experience to players. "We normally want to make our games as rich and as deep as we can for you," Sasko said referring to titles such as The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077. "We want to provide you with the best possible game we have, that’s always the goal."
Similar to other major games, Cyberpunk 2077 contains a considerable amount of content that was removed during the development process. Some of the elements that were cut include the train system, more comprehensive hacking features, and a more intricate backstory that could have had a significant impact on gameplay.
