André Cardoso showcased three demos highlighting the difference.
Game Developer and UX Designer André Cardoso presented this captivating video, showcasing three demos with dynamic gameplay and comparing two versions of each of them – "with and without polish," highlighting the difference between them.
In the second, "polished" version of each demo, the creator added a range of subtle elements, such as VFX, varied camera movements, hit feedback, smooth rotation, UI feedback, and more. The result is that these modifications change the perception of the gameplay dramatically and create a more complete and appealing image.
The project was created for the Establishing and Refining Gameplay Bootcamp, where Cardoso participates as a guest instructor. The main goal of the bootcamp is to teach participants how to focus on refining the game demos they've already created rather than adding a wide range of novel features.
On his YouTube channel, Mix and Jam, André Cardoso shares captivating recreations of other games' "feel," breaking down their appealing gameplay features and bringing them to Unity. For example, the developer recreated the effects of Balatro, the Mario Party franchise, The Pathless, Mario Party Minigames, Animal Crossing, and more:
