According to Christopher Dring from GamesIndustry.biz, who recently spoke with developers at GDC 2024 and discussed the state of the game industry, PS5 Pro, which is set to release later this year, might not be a necessary or exciting upgrade to the current console.
It seems that there is little enthusiasm for the updated version among developers. "Developers didn't seem to feel they needed it, they weren't really making the most of the PS5 in the first place," Dring shared.
"I didn't meet a single person that understood the point of it," Dring said.
Speaking of Xbox, Dring emphasized concerns regarding its position in the market. He mentioned that some big gamedev company expressed dissatisfaction with the sales of its games on the Xbox Series. The representative from this company reportedly stated that their focus now lies primarily on the PC and PS5 platforms, as they plan to discontinue releasing games on Xbox due to it being deemed financially unviable.
In terms of Xbox sales performance, the situation appears bleak, particularly in Europe. Sales were already declining in 2023, and by 2024, the situation worsened significantly. As a result, some retailers are considering ceasing the sale of Xbox consoles and games altogether.
