Diablo Creator Says He Wouldn't Choose the Direction the Diablo Series Is Now Going

The developer of the original Diablo David Brevik shared that he wouldn't follow the same route Blizzard is now going with the Diablo franchise.

Despite players' overall love for the Diablo series, there's been a controversy around the most recent Diablo games, especially around Diablo Immortal which is widely criticized for its monetization systems and, likely for this reason, is now one of the lowest-rating games on Metacritic (both mobile and PC versions).

David Brevik, one of the original creators of the Diablo series and the co-founder of Blizzard North, who served as the company's president from 1993 to 2003, has recently shared his opinion on the direction the franchise is going right now saying that he wouldn't use the approach Activision Blizzard is using if he were still in charge of the series.

"It wasn’t the direction I would have gone in, but I don’t have any choice. I left Blizzard and it is their IP so they can go the directions they want to go in," Brevik said in an interview with PCGamesN.

The developer, however, noted that the franchise is still doing a good job and the reason why a number of players may think the newer games are worse than the original ones is that they look at old Diablo games "through rose-coloured glasses" and do not notice good things due to their nostalgia.

He also added that the games industry has changed significantly in over 20 years and it's harder now to create a "ground-breaking" product due to "competition, the number of products, maturity of the industry", and "game-theory education."

Speaking of Diablo Immortal's microtransaction system, Brevik said that he wouldn't follow this route too, although he shared he doesn't think the introduction of microtransactions could ruin the impression of the game.

"Diablo still has a ton of goodwill in the community. People love the IP and the stories," he said. "People seem to really like Diablo Immortal [...], and though there are disagreements about the business model, the game seems to be doing quite well."
