Discord Rolls Out New Way to Check Users' Ages
The new system automatically guesses users' ages, so most people won't have to prove anything.
Discord
Discord announced a new system this week that automatically figures out whether users are adults or teens, instead of asking everyone to scan an ID or take a selfie.
The company says it will look at signals like how old an account is and what servers someone's active in, and not in private messages, to guess a user's age group. Discord expects more than 90% of people won't need to do anything.
Adults will see no changes to how Discord works. Teens will get some new safety rules: messages from strangers go into a separate inbox for review first, certain images get blurred, and age-restricted servers and content are blocked.
If someone needs to prove their age manually, Discord added options beyond ID scans and selfies, including credit card verification, an app store account, or a digital ID wallet.

The update follows Discord's February pause of an earlier version of age verification. Earlier, Discord introduced facial scan verification in the UK and Australia to meet local age-assurance laws.
Before that, the company had experienced security incidents in which government-issued IDs were exposed.
