Dissecting The Art Style of Outer Wilds

Mobius Digital explains the principal features of each planet in Unity Creator Spotlight.

Unity and Outer Wild's art director and environment/VFX artist released a video where they discuss how each planet in the game is made. In the 2-hour video, the team reveals that the visual inspiration for the game came from the "camping in space" prompt, which is a mix of "rustic backwoods naturalistic environment" and the "60s-70s era NASA." The art director says his main goal was to not just make the game look pretty but to enhance the design.

Outer Wilds is an open-world mystery about a solar system trapped in an endless time loop. Named Game of the Year 2019 by Giant Bomb, Polygon, Eurogamer, and The Guardian, it found love and support among gamers. The game is developed by Mobius Digital and published by Annapurna Interactive. The game was released in 2019 for Windows, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4.
