Dither Boy 6.0 Adds Animation Features & Better Video Support

See what's new in the newly redesigned dithering app for artists.

Released in 2025 by Studio AAA's Jack McArdle and Danny Void, Dither Boy has been steadily evolving and refining its toolset to become the ultimate all-in-one solution for image, animation, and video dithering. With this new update, the app received a complete redesign: rebuilt from the ground up, Dither Boy 6.0 offers exclusive new effects along with several long-requested features from the community.

If you're not familiar with Dither Boy, it lets you create custom dithering effects for animation, illustration, video editing, and other creative work. It's a one-time purchase with all future updates included, emphasizes a no-AI approach, and provides access to more than 60 effects with full control.

In version 6.0, as the developers shared with us, the goal was to ensure the visual experience matched the overhaul of features. Improved performance, extensive export options, and custom app themes are all presented within a freshly designed interface.

Specific colors can now be fully customized in-app, and with the revamped "source" palette generation, users can easily achieve the exact effect they have in mind.

Central to Dither Boy 6.0 is the new animation feature, Temporal Variation, which applies one of nine controllable animated noise patterns to the input image, letting you experiment with shifting values. This feature is heavily inspired by retro screens. Alongside these improvements, live video playback has also been introduced in-app.

A week after the launch of Dither Boy 6.0, customizable halftone effects were released as a free update for all users. Alongside the video and color updates, Dither Boy now includes 63 dithering algorithms. New post-processing effects, such as Epsilon Glow, Chromatic Aberration, JPEG Glitch, and Blur/Sharpen, are fully stackable and reorderable, giving users even more creative control.

The developers strongly emphasize that Dither Boy is made by creatives for creatives. There's an active community with events, competitions, and prizes, and user feedback is always heard and eventually incorporated into the app.
