A few days before the highly anticipated release of DOOM: The Dark Ages, the next installment of the beloved franchise, fans are hit with disappointing news that the physical edition still requires internet access to download and play.
According to a player who received a copy of DOOM: The Dark Ages PS5 early, shared via Twitter user Does it play?, it contains barely any data on the disc as the game file is only 85 MB. According to the official PC specifications, players are advised to have a system with at least 100 GB of storage available before downloading.
Not surprisingly, players who were planning to purchase the physical edition and enjoy the game on day one and at any future date are furious about this. Some have decided to cancel their orders and instead wait for a discount on the PC version.
This is the same for Xbox players, who found that the file is only 328 MB there. And when player Nilynix tried to run the game, "it brings you to the store and gives you 3 options to choose, the first one which is the standard edition lets you install the game but then it installs nothing and thats the end."
Although we have all these videos and photos from fans, plus another picture showing the "Internet Required" reminder next to the game's ESRB rating on a physical copy, it's worth noting that they are none of the official information, and so far, neither idSoftware nor Microsoft has responded to these concerns. We'll soon figure it out when the game drops on May 15.
