Dragon's Dogma 2 Team Is Inspired by the World and NPCs of GTA V

The director says they admire how Rockstar created a living world.

Hideaki Itsuno, the director of Dragon's Dogma 2 discussed their work in a recent interview and shared their sources of inspiration.

The developer shared that Capcom's primary goal is to implement ideas in the sequel that the studio had to abandon during the production of the first game, partly due to technical limitations.

"We mostly just wanted to take things that we couldn’t achieve in Dragon’s Dogma at the time it came out, whether it be from just lack of time or pushing the limits of the hardware that was around at the time," said the director.

"So the main inspiration was sort of ourselves, and finally being able to achieve what we wanted on this current console generation."

When asked about games that had the greatest influence on the action RPG, the director mentioned Grand Theft Auto V saying that the team drew inspiration from the open world created by Rockstar Games and its non-playable characters.

"If I had to pick one other game that came out in the meantime, I would actually say GTA 5. I kind of admired how they were able to create a world in which it really felt like the NPCs were going about their lives independently of the player," Itsuno said.

The action RPG will be released for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series consoles. The team hasn't shared the release date yet, unfortunately.
