DreamWorks Posted an In-Depth FAQ About its MoonRay Renderer

Here's your chance to learn more about DreamWorks' soon-to-be-open-sourced renderer.

In case you missed it, a couple of weeks ago, DreamWorks Animation announced the plans to make its production renderer MoonRay available open-source.

Used for various animation projects, including The Bad Guys and the upcoming Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, MoonRay is capable of generating both stylized and photorealistic results and can be integrated as a viewport renderer in DCC tools that support Hydra delegates, including Houdini and Katana.

The renderer is set to be released later this year under an open-source Apache 2.0 license, although the exact release date is currently unknown.

Even though MoonRay hasn't been released yet, the studio is already publishing materials that might help developers and artists that plan to use the renderer in the future. Just recently, DreamWorks published a comprehensive FAQ section, providing more information about using the renderer for various projects, its features, and requirements.

The section contains answers to such topics as batch rendering, DCC integrations, MoonRay's scene description format, minimum hardware and software requirements, hair geometry generators, support for OSL or MaterialX, and much more. You can learn more about MoonRay and check out the FAQ section by clicking this link.
