"We win... and it’s your fault!"
The iconic construction and management simulation game from Bay 12 Games, Dwarf Fortress, is continuing its glorious success. The enhanced, graphical version of 2006's title was released on Steam in early December and it already has sold almost half a million copies.
The new sales milestone was shared by Dwarf Fortress programmer and co-designer Tarn Adams who has been working on the game together with his brother, Zach Adams, since 2002. Adams shared a blog post on the Bay 12 Games forum saying that nearly 500,000 copies of the game's "premium" Steam version were sold in December and thanking the fans for their support over two decades of the game's existence.
"Dwarf Fortress is a wild success it seems, but it is all an illusion without you. [...] None of this could have happened without you," Adams wrote. "Be confident in the fact that none of this was possible without the support of the people that helped us out from the beginning and those that helped us along these amazing 20 years, by far the best in my life. [...] We win... and it’s your fault!"
The game's success seems to be a surprise both for the developer and publisher. Prior to the game's launch, a statistician enlisted by the Dwarf Fortress publisher Kitfox Games predicted that the game would sell 160,000 copies in about two months, however, it managed to reach this figure just within 24 hours of its release.
