Ed Boon Seemingly Confirmed What NetherRealm's Next Project Will Be

Options are not surprising – Mortal Kombat 12 or Injustice 3.

NetherRealm Studios is usually quite predictable in its lineup of games as, in recent years, it tended to alternate between the two of its IPs, Mortal Kombat and Injustice. For instance, the studio released Mortal Kombat 9 in 2011 which was followed by Injustice: Gods Among Us two years later, then in 2015, Mortal Kombat X arrived followed by 2017's Injustice 2 and 2019's Mortal Kombat 11.

However, now fans had a reason to expect something different. First of all, back in February this year, Mortal Combat co-creator Ed Boon shared that NetherRealm had broken its pattern implying that the studio's next title won't be Injustice 3.

"When we broke that pattern, there was a lot of speculation of what we would be doing next," Boon said at the time. "I can tell you there was a reason for it, and when we announce our next game, it’ll make a lot more sense."

Boon's statement made fans wonder what the studio may have in store for them next – so they suggested that NetherRealm could be working on the next Mortal Combat or preparing a spinoff based on the Mortal Kombat or Injustice universes.

In addition, there was speculation that NetherRealm might be working on an entirely new IP, probably, something based on the Marvel universe or the game where Marvel heroes face DC characters. These rumors started to circulate after Boon published a poll on Twitter account asking fans which game they would like to see next, with the options being "Injustice 3", "Marvel Game", "Marvel vs DC", and "Next Mortal Kombat".

However, a recent AMA hosted by Ed Boon on Twitter suggests that Marvel and Marvel vs DC options fly away. When asked for a hint about what NetherRealm's next game would be, Boon gave a pretty direct reply saying that it will be "I3 or MK12" – the abbreviations which are clearly pointing towards Injustice 3 and Mortal Kombat 12.

While this revelation is not really surprising, at least, it eliminates all the wilder theories fans previously suggested.

During the same AMA, Boon also addressed the lack of 3D-era characters in recent games saying that the studio "will soon fix" the issue. In addition, Boon confirmed that the future Mortal Kombat games will feature a number of horror movie characters but said that Freddy Fazbear from the Five Nights at Freddy's series will not be among the guest characters.
