Eerie 3D Animation Created Using Houdini & Karma XPU

The goal of the project was to learn how to properly use Solaris and USD.

CG Generalist and Houdini FX Artist Tim van Helsdingen presented Walking in the Woods, a stunning and slightly creepy 3D animation depicting a first-person walk through an eerie dark forest. According to the creator, this outstanding sequence, much like most of Tim's earlier works was made using SideFX's flagship procedural 3D software Houdini and "Karma XPU with full USD workflow". The goal of the project was to learn more about Houdini's Solaris and the USD workflow.

"I wanted to learn how to properly use Solaris and USD, so I spend way too long putting this together to try to learn the best workflow," commented the creator "I've went through the process of writing everything to USD and keeping the entire workflow in USD as well, similar to how you would handle something like this in a big studio. Made a lot of mistakes, but I learned a lot as well!"

Additionally, the creator shared a short breakdown showing how the animation was created:

Earlier, Tim also shared tons of insightful Houdini tutorials, showing a procedural approach to creating fluid textures, explaining how to simulate corrosive acid and boiling water, discussing how to set up a Jeep driving through mud simulation, and more.
