Electronic Arts Removes the Original Crysis Game From Steam

Instead, fans of the old-school classic are urged to access it through the EA Play subscription service.

Amid growing concerns over video game preservation and players' appeals to developers and publishers to keep old-school titles accessible – at least as single-player experiences – Electronic Arts has quietly pulled the first Crysis game from Steam, making it unavailable for purchase by new players or longtime fans of the iconic 2007 first-person shooter.

Crytek

While the original version of Crysis was taken off Steam over four years ago, until recently, it remained accessible via Crysis Maximum Edition, which included both the base game and the 2008 standalone expansion, Crysis Warhead. However, on June 20, Maximum Edition was unexpectedly removed from the marketplace entirely, with its URL now redirecting to Steam's main page – unlike the original Crysis, whose page still exists, albeit with a notice that the game cannot be purchased.

Instead, Electronic Arts encourages those looking for an authentic 2007 experience and aren't interested in the 2021 remaster to try accessing the original Crysis via its EA Play subscription service, costing $6 a month. However, if you, like many others, aren't a big fan of subscriptions and prefer to actually own your games, please note that Crysis 1 is still purchasable on GOG and, funnily enough, is available with a 75% discount until July 10 – currently making it cheaper than one month of EA Play.
