Epic Games Changes Unreal Engine's Pricing Policy

The new pricing model will only affect non-gamedev companies earning over $1 million a year.

Building on its 2023 announcement, Epic Games has just introduced a new pricing model for Unreal Engine, along with its compatible tools Twinmotion and RealityCapture.

As per the company's latest statement, the pricing model for indie creators will remain the same, meaning that the engine will continue to be freely accessible for students, educators, hobbyists, and companies with annual gross revenue or per-title earnings below $1 million.

Instead, changes will only impact non-game creators, such as those involved in filmmaking, television production, architectural visualization, and users integrating Unreal Engine code at runtime, with the threshold remaining at $1 million annually. Epic further clarified that the new policy will be implemented with the release of Unreal Engine 5.4 in late April and will not impact users of Unreal Engine 5.3 or any earlier versions.

For non-gaming companies with yearly revenues surpassing $1 million, Epic has introduced a new seat-based Unreal Subscription priced at $1,850 per seat per year, with regional pricing available in select countries. Each seat grants access to Unreal Engine 5.4 (and future versions released during the subscription period), in addition to Twinmotion and RealityCapture. Additionally, the team will offer a 30-day free trial covering all three products.

Twinmotion and RealityCapture, also subject to the new pricing model, will still be available to purchase individually, priced at $445 and $1,250 per year, respectively. As an added bonus, both Twinmotion and RealityCapture will now be free to use for students and hobbyists whose projects rake in less than $1M a year.

"Our goal is to keep our tools free for as many people as possible, especially folks who are just starting out," comments the team. "These changes are designed to make long-term Unreal Engine development sustainable so that we can continue to provide the very best, most advanced creator tools to all industries – big companies, small studios, individuals, and everyone in between."
