Epic Games has released Twinmotion 2023.1, an updated version of the company's real-time visualization software based on Unreal Engine. Focusing on bringing updates to the software that would serve multiple industries, the release brings a new and improved UI, Path Tracer enhancements, 78 new materials, Twinmotion Datasmith file exporter, upgraded viewport display, and tons of other new features.
Among many other things, the upgraded version of the software features a fresh new UI, designed to increase your productivity by bringing the tool's functionality to the surface, making it more accessible and easy to find, and reducing the number of clicks it takes to access controls.
Another major improvement was added to Twinmotion's Path Tracer, introduced with the 2022.1 update. The list of enhancements for Path Tracer includes support for decals and volumetric fog, improved sky rendering, and the ability for transparent objects to render correctly with depth of field.
Moreover, Twinmotion 2023.1 features multiple upgrades to its materials, including 78 new materials added to the Fabric, Leather, Plastic, and Metal categories, a new material type with dedicated parameters and features for handling effects specific to car paint, a number of improvements to base materials, which now follow standard PBR workflow and naming conventions, an option for Glass base materials to use the thin translucent shading mode, and more.
On top of that, the release replaces the Twinmotion Datasmith Importer Plugin for Unreal Engine with a built-in Twinmotion Datasmith file exporter, enabling you to export your project from Twinmotion – including materials, static meshes, and textures – in a format that Unreal Engine can understand.
The Twinmotion file format has also been modified. Identical meshes and textures in a project can be detected and duplication avoided in the save file, scenes are saved with multithreaded compression on multi-core hardware, and HDRI files are now considerably compressed and embedded in Twinmotion files.
The software's viewport display has also been improved, with Twinmotion now using Temporal Super Resolution (TSR) to upsample the viewport display, resulting in higher-quality viewport rendering than in previous versions with no impact on performance. Additionally, the release adds Unreal Engine 5.1 support, greatly improving the viewport display compared to previous versions.
