Experimenting With Unity 6's New Hair System

Sakura Rabbit tried out the new hair creation tools introduced in the latest version of Unity.

Earlier this month, Unity Technologies shipped Unity 6, a highly anticipated update to their popular game engine, which brought stability improvements, faster rendering, powerful lighting options, comprehensive multiplayer workflows, dynamic AI capabilities, enhanced support for mobile web runtimes, and more.

One of the key highlights of this release was the introduction of innovative hair creation tools, first showcased in the Time Ghost tech cinematic demo released a month before the update.  With these tools, hair can be "simulated and rendered as individual strands and LODed as fewer, wider strands in the distance, fast enough to be part of a large scene."

Sakura Rabbit, a renowned Developer, VFX Artist, and Unity enthusiast, was among the first to try out Unity 6's novel toolset, showcasing a neat simulation embedded above. The sim in question depicts realistic-looking interactions between a human hand and a short hairdo, with hair dynamically reacting to being moved around in real-time. As always, Sakura has shared the project files and provided more info on her Fanbox page, which you can access here for a fee.

Speaking of Time Ghost, earlier, Unity Demo Team's Tech Lead Rob Cupisz offered a closer look at the character's hair simulation and ML-driven cloth deformation from the cinematic, as well as the environment itself, which features interactive ECS grass that you can run through. You can check out the breakdown here.
