Explore This Tactile UI Powered By Real-Time WebGL Shader

Jelly glass.

Giuseppe Recupero, better known online as Jae, has a beautiful portfolio of shaders built directly in the browser with WebGL, focusing on effects such as dispersion, absorption, and subsurface scattering. This particular experiment plays with the boundary between 2D and 3D graphics, exploring what happens when a cloth simulation controls the surface of a refractive material. The result truly feels like jelly made from glass, combined with a ray-marched cube, dispersion, and real-time refraction.

You can also try it yourself: hover and drag to explore the interface and see how it responds in real time. Access it by clicking this link.

Jae recently added soft-body physics to his glass experiments, the little dots move as you spin the die, then settle back into place. It all runs live in the browser.

Jae also practices code golfing, a coding challenge where you try to make a piece of code as short as possible. He shares many of his shader experiments on FragCoord, an online shader-sharing platform XorDev created as an alternative to Shadertoy.

If you want to learn shader coding, XorDev recently made more than 70 of his tutorials available to everyone. They're more like deep dives than step-by-step lessons, explaining the math and techniques behind shaders, from noise and ray marching to fractals and more. However, he also shared some ready-to-use shaders, including ones for creating glass effects.

Here are a couple more projects to check out if you're interested in creative coding: mesq's jiggly jelly dessert and ScottieFox's beautiful water caustics:
