Look at This Jiggly Jelly Dessert Made with Three.js

Misha Kiiatkin, also known as mesq, shared his stylized jelly dessert piece made with Three.js.

Misha Kiiatkin, also known as mesq, made a dreamy, frutiger aero-like Three.js 3D animation of a jelly fruit dessert in a cup. Kiiatkin is a Technical Artist at edclub and a true Three.js wizard. The stylized piece was inspired by maomomiji's colorful food illustrations made with acrylic paint.

To create a see-through, jelly-like asset, the artist used hand-painted normals with PostProcessing in TSL. Hand-painted normal maps are perfect for making stylized textures. You can achieve them by applying custom normal maps onto a standard material in Three.js.

Aside from those, to create the stylized look, Kiiatkin used brush strokes based on color gradients. To reduce Three.js's jittery grain, he fixed the dither noise in the scene. To simulate jiggle physics in the animation, the artist set up soft body wobble for the main object. He utilized transmission in Three.js BLOCKS to adjust the refractive depth of the materials and achieve the shiny, glass-like look for the plastic cup, the jelly, and the fruit chunks.

If you like the pastel jiggly animation, you can play with it here. Both desserts are interactive, and you can zoom in and out, change the view angle, and shake the cups to make the jelly move.

You can find more Three.js stuff on mesq's Twitter. Misha Kiiatkin is a Three.js pro, and this year, he gave a talk on how to create hand-painted assets for Three.js-based projects at the Three.js Conf in Paris. He also shares some of his projects on GitHub, so if you want to make something similar, check it out.
