Fable Reboot Release Delayed To 2026, But Xbox Said "It's Definitely Worth The Wait"

New pre-alpha gameplay footage gives us a look at the city environments with beautiful varieties, combat mechanics, magical abilities, and more.

Microsoft has confirmed that the highly anticipated reboot of the 2004 fantasy RPG Fable will be delayed from the 2025 release window to 2026.

The announcement was made by Craig Duncan, the head of Xbox Game Studios, during the latest episode of the Xbox Podcast. This will give more time to the developers at Playground Games, which has been working on the project using the ForzaTech Engine since it was unveiled in 2020 and joined by Eidos-Montréal in 2021 as an assistant developer. "While I know that’s not maybe the news people want to hear, what I want to assure people of is that it's definitely worth the wait," Duncan said.

Although the release will make fans wait longer, Duncan is very proud and confident in the game's quality, saying that he is very excited about the progress that Playground has made. To give more details on what fans could expect from it, he continued:

"And just what they're bringing to Fable as a franchise, just think of the visuals of what you expect of Playground games plus amazing gameplay, British humor, Playground's version of Albion. So inspired by what's gone before with the franchise but their take, in quite frankly the most beautifully realized version of Albion you've ever seen."

While bringing the news of the delay, the podcast also shows new pre-alpha gameplay footage (starting around the 16-minute mark) to give us a look at the game's city environments with beautiful varieties, combat mechanics, magical abilities, and more. The smooth transition from cinematic cut scenes to actual fight is quite impressive.

Fable reboot will be available on Xbox Series X/S and PC when it's released in 2026. There was a discussion about whether it would also be launched on PlayStation. While it seems unlikely that it will be available on PS from day one, there is a possibility that it may be released there later, as many Xbox first-party games now take a multiplatform approach.
