Facebook Launches Open Beta For Its VR Meeting Platform

Facebook announced they are launching an open beta of Horizon Workrooms, their new platform for people to collaborate remotely with Oculus Quest 2 or smartphones and other devices.

The new app comes with an avatar creation system which was originally designed for the Facebook Horizon virtual play platform. Worked can generate cartoonish characters in 3D and then have virtual meetings with coworkers. It is actually one of Facebook's first steps to its own metaverse where everything is interconnected and where VR is super important.

Horizon Workrooms is now available for free on Oculus Quest 2 in different countries with Quest 2 support. The team noted that users wear an Oculus Quest 2 VR headset to get the best possible experience but people can also join using smartphones, laptops, tablets, and other devices.

"You are actually in the demo," said Andrew “Boz” Bosworth, the vice president of Facebook Reality Labs. "We’ve been talking about the future of work for a long time. It’s why we’re in AR/VR. The pandemic hitting in the last 18 months has given us greater confidence in this technology."

What do you think about this new way to have meetings? How do you think it will affect work communications?
