If you're on TikTok, you've probably seen some clips of the legal battle between the app's creator ByteDance and the US government. It's hilarious and, frankly, quite sad. Still, the lawmakers want the company to sell TikTok, otherwise, the video-sharing hosting could be banned in the country.
Former Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick has been sighted among potential buyers, according to The Wall Street Journal, which says that he'd have to pay hundreds of billions of dollars for it. Kotick is reportedly looking for partners and floated the idea to some people, including OpenAI's boss Sam Altman, at an Allen & Co. conference earlier this week. OpenAI could use TikTok to train its AI models, the outlet suggests.
Not everything is lost for the app yet. If it does get banned, ByteDance might challenge the legality of the bill, citing the First Amendment. If this doesn't work, there are already businesspeople willing to purchase it, like Kotick, who left Activision Blizzard in December. All in all, the US won't be left without TikTok.
