Bonkahe is working on Sunshine Clouds v2.
If you're a Godot user, you may already be familiar with Sunshine Clouds, a project aimed at delivering fully volumetric clouds that are both extendable and optimized for performance, even at distances of up to 30 km from the camera. Recently, Bonkahe, the creator of Sunshine Clouds, announced that he's working on an updated version of the system.
Ever since the Compositor was introduced, he's wanted to migrate the system over to it, as it provides direct access to depth, color, and motion vectors. On top of that, being compute-based opens the door to more advanced techniques like accumulation.
Bonkahe has confirmed that Sunshine Clouds v2 will be free. However, if you'd like to support his work and get access to WIP code and behind-the-scenes development, Patreon is available.
According to the developer, the current state of the plug-in is that he's not completely satisfied with its optimization. Bonkahe's working on a technique called incremental interlaced rendering, which has shown mixed results, and also experimented with rendering at half and quarter resolutions and then upscaling, but that approach also has drawbacks.
