Game Developer Breaks Down How to Make Cinematic Trailer with Real-Time Face Capture Using iPhone & Unity

The footage is used in Ankoku's Blueman.

If you saw Ankoku's adorable recreation of the Ōtori-Sama bath scene from Spirited Away, you might think this cute style is all the studio does. Then, its upcoming game Blueman will be a surprise for you: its dark horror atmosphere invites you to uncover its secrets.

Ankoku shared a glimpse of its development in a short breakdown of creating cinematic trailers in Unity using an iPhone XS. You can see the face capture in real time, set with ARKit, an API for iOS, iPadOS, and VisionOS.

Ankoku has a grand mission in mind: to prove that Unity is better than Unreal Engine.

"I truly believe that Unity can compete with UE5 in terms of graphics (especially when it comes to the graphics/performance ratio. I've worked with UE, and as a graphics programmer, I have a good understanding of its real strengths and weaknesses). However, to showcase this, more demonstrations like Time Ghost need to appear."

The developer believes the main challenge to be Unity’s "historically established path, which has been heavily tied to the mobile sector and small indie projects." Because of this, many people associate the engine with stylized small-scale games, not photorealistic AAA experiences.

"I believe that if Unity gets at least a little closer to real competition with UE, it will benefit both engines," Ankoku said.

If you want to see the mocap in action, wishlist Blueman on Steam before its release in April.

"'This place tests your limits, and only the strongest will find a way out' – it sounds like a cheap reality show slogan. But there are no spectators here, no applause. There's only silence, creaking floorboards, and the feeling that you're being watched. The truth is more straightforward: you're trapped here. And you're going to die here. The only question is how soon… and who (or what) will reach you first."
