Gaming Journalists Rate Elden Ring Nightreign FromSoftware's Worst Soulslike

The game currently sits at 78/100 on Metacritic.

FromSoftware's Elden Ring Nightreign is just around the corner, meaning the first reviews from gaming journalists have already begun pouring in – and they're far from glowing. Apparently, the studio's foray into roguelikes hasn't gone over too well, with critics rating Nightreign the worst soulslike the creator of the genre has ever put to the table.

At the moment of writing, the upcoming title sits at 78/100 on PlayStation 5 and 79/100 on PC on Metacritic, based on 72 and 42 reviews, respectively. Among the elements gaming journalists have criticized are Nightreign's overreliance on reused assets, an unsatisfying combat system, a lack of crossplay, technical issues, and poor balancing in single-player mode.

While 78 is still nothing to scoff at, comparatively speaking, it's not that great. For instance, the original Elden Ring holds a 96, its Shadow of the Erdtree DLC sits at 94, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice has a 90, Bloodborne is slightly ahead with 92, and games from the Dark Souls trilogy scored 89, 91, and 89. Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon, the most recent non-soulslike game from FromSoftware, is also ahead, boasting a score of 86/100. In fact, to find a lower-rated FromSoftware title, you'd have to go back seven years to 2018's Déraciné, which landed at 68.

That said, it's important to remember that all of those scores, Nightreign included, were given not by the gaming community, but by gaming journalists, whose opinions are known to clash with those of regular gamers quite often. So, as always, take the new Elden Ring's current rating with a hefty pinch of salt, wait for the user reviews, and formulate your own opinion by trying out the game yourself.
