GDC 2020: Using Machine Learning to Ink Textures

The next GDC will feature a cool session hosted by the team behind Borderlands 3. 

The session will explain how machine learning was used to automate the tedious process of adding hand-drawn inks inf Borderlands 3.

"After an overview of the Borderlands 3 art style, you'll learn why automating the inking pipeline is the holy grail for Gearbox's art department," states the description. "Gain insights into the steps taken to achieve this goal, including but not limited to selecting the right network architecture, choosing the training curriculum that gives the model the best chance of success, training the model, and wrapping the resulting model into an artist-friendly GUI." 

Ryan Smith, Lead Technical Artist at Gearbox Software will help you understand a number of principles and the pipeline behind machine learning projects. Please note that the talk is meant for artists and technical artists above the junior level.
