Gears of War 2 and 3 writer Joshua Ortega has apparently hinted that he is returning to the work on the Gears of War franchise.
Ortega seemingly hinted at a return to the Gears franchise in a tweet saying, "Once again it’s on!" and reposting his tweet from 2019 when he described his work on the series. The writer hasn't shared any details about his possible involvement in creating a new game in the franchise but in response to a fan's question whether he returns to work on the game series he wrote a meaningful "Hmm...".
Ortega acted as a writer and co-director for Gears of War 2 as well as co-created the story and narrative level design for Gears of War 3, although he is not listed as a writer for the game, at least in the credits of the shooter.
He didn't take part in the development of Gears of War 4 and Gears 5, which saw a marked change in the overall tone of the franchise. It's unclear if he's working on a continuation of the Gears 5 story or if he's doing something else in the shooter series.
The Coalition is now reportedly working on Gears 6. In addition, Netflix is currently developing Gears of War adaptations for a live-action feature film and an adult animated series in partnership with the studio.
