GfK: UK's Highest-Earning Video Game Franchises

Analytics company GfK revealed the top 30 best-selling video game brands in UK history. FIFA unsurprisingly took the No.1 spot among the highest-earning game franchises.

FIFA 22

A recent report by analytics company GfK revealed the top 30 best-selling video game franchises in UK history. The firm claims that for the past 27 years, those 30 games generated over £12.7 billion in revenue, based on the UK's boxed sales data since 1995.

EA's FIFA unsurprisingly took the No.1 spot among the highest-earning game brands in the UK. Over its nearly 30 years of history, the franchise produced 50 games. Currently, FIFA  is an annualized series, although GfK recalled several years with numerous releases. For instance, in 2006, such titles as FIFA 07, FIFA Street 2, FIFA World Cup Germany 2006, and FIFA Manager 07 were released.

The second top-selling brand on the list was the Call of Duty franchise, which has had 32 games over nearly 20 years. In terms of physical sales, the series peaked with 2010's Call of Duty: Black Ops and 2011's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Nintendo's Mario franchise took the third spot. Across all of its sub-brands, it has released 109 games with its Mario Kart Wii, Mario Kart 8, and New Super Mario Bros. delivering the highest physical sales for the company.

Call of Duty: Vanguard

At the No.4 spot was Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto series. It should be noted that GTAV has accounted for 40% of overall GTA franchise sales in the UK.

Electronic Arts has become an unquestioned leader on the chart as, apart from FIFA, the publisher has eight video game franchises in the top 30 list including Need for Speed, Battlefield, and The Sims. It is followed by Nintendo with 5 video game franchises (Mario, Pokémon, Wii FitThe Olympic Games, and Zelda), Warner which also has 5 series on the list (LEGO, Star Wars, Marvel, DC, and Harry Potter), Sony with 4 franchises (Marvel, Formula One, Gran Turismo, and Crash Bandicoot), and Activision Blizzard which has 3 video game franchises in the chart (Call of Duty, Guitar Hero/DJ Hero, and Skylanders).
