Ghost of Yōtei Devs Planned "Other Spinoffs" for the Sequel

Ghost of Yōtei marks the beginning of a brand-new official franchise.

Sony and Sucker Punch have a greater plan for the newly announced sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, as it marks the beginning of a brand new official franchise, which will include “at least one movie and other spinoffs.”

In an interview with the New York Times, Nate Fox and Jason Connell, creative directors of Ghost of Tsushima who team up again on Ghost of Yōtei, have shed light on the initial thoughts behind the upcoming title and how they decided the major feeling they’d like the game to deliver to players.

“When we started working on a sequel, the first question we asked ourselves is ‘What is the DNA of a Ghost game? It is about transporting the player to the romance and beauty of feudal Japan,” Fox said.

Keeping that in mind, the US-based developers visited various locations in Japan, including Mount Yotei, an active stratovolcano in northern Japan whose stunning beauty had Connell staring at it for two hours. Another spot that greatly inspired them is Shiretoko National Park, as the beautiful scenery here is accompanied by the dangers of bears that make a perfect unsettling vibe. “Being in this incredibly beautiful park with jagged cliffs and water, yet all the time being aware there were dangerous bears, was electrifying.” Fox said. And that is exactly what the team would want to bring to the game, “ that feeling of danger.”

What could pair better with the cinematic visuals than great storytelling? Despite not sharing too many details about the narrative, featuring the female protagonist Atsu, the duo has called the story of Ghost of Yōtei “underdog vengeance” and stated that players will have “greater control over her story than in the previous game.”

The sequel is scheduled to be released next year. Watch the announce trailer here if you missed it, and read the full interview by the New York Times here.
