Ghost of Yotei Has Outsold Assassin's Creed Shadows on PS5, Analysts Say

It took Sucker Punch's new title 3 weeks to surpass what Shadows sold in 7 months.

Since January 1, 2025, when the gaming community learned that there would be two Japan-themed AAA titles launching this year – Assassin's Creed Shadows by Ubisoft and Ghost of Yotei by Sucker Punch – discussions began over which one would prove superior in the end. Apparently, we now have our answer, with Alinea Analytics reporting in their newsletter that, despite releasing only this month, Yotei has already outsold Shadows on PlayStation 5.

According to their estimates, Ghost of Yotei has now sold 2.5 million copies on PS5, while Assassin's Creed Shadows has reached 2.4 million lifetime sales on the console, meaning it took Sucker Punch's new title only three weeks to match and surpass what Shadows sold in seven months. Additionally, analysts estimate that Shadows has sold over 4.3 million copies across all platforms – a respectable figure, but peanuts compared to AC Valhalla's sales and possibly even below AC Mirage's.

As to the reasons why Shadows was outpaced so quickly, Alinea cites three main ones: brand loyalty, with more PS5 owners picking up Yotei simply because it's a PS5 exclusive; the reputation of Ghost of Tsushima, which had already demonstrated Sucker Punch's expertise in crafting a Japanese setting; and franchise fatigue, as many players had already experienced Assassin's Creed games and found little that stood out in Shadows.

That being said, as reputable as Alinea Analytics may be, their estimates are still just that – estimates – and should not be taken as confirmation of either game's actual sales. It's also important to remember that in terms of total sales, Shadows is still ahead, thanks to its presence on other platforms. Whether Yotei could surpass the alleged 4.3 million on PlayStation alone remains to be seen, as even if it eventually launches on PC, PC ports of PS5 exclusives have historically seen limited popularity among PC gamers.
