GIMP 3.2 Introduces Link & Vector Layers
See what's new in the first feature release since GIMP 3.0.
GIMP
Just a year after the long-awaited GIMP 3.0 release, GIMP 3.2 arrives as the first major update, bringing even more features. The latest version of the free and open-source image editing software adds two new layer types, both editable non-destructively, which has been the focus of the roadmap.
Link Layers allow you to "link" an external image as part of a composition in GIMP. It functions similarly to the Linked Smart Object feature in Photoshop. The Link Layer will automatically update if the external image is changed in another editor. For example, if you include an SVG logo as a Link Layer in GIMP, you can edit it in Inkscape and see the changes live in GIMP as well. The Path tool can now create Vector Layers, which lets you draw shapes with adjustable fill and stroke settings.

GIMP 3.2 also enhances the MyPaint Brush tool with 20 new brushes, and it now automatically adjusts to your canvas zoom and rotation for more dynamic painting. A new Overwrite paint mode allows you to draw over existing colors without blending their transparency.
The release adds improved interoperability with Photoshop, Krita, and Procreate, and brings various UI/UX improvements. It's also the very last version of GIMP to be distributed as 32-bit on Windows.
