God of War Ragnarök Sounds Were Made with Plungers, Pasta & Melons

PlayStation Studios foley artist talks about sound design for the game.

Game- and filmmaking are not easy tasks and require more effort than it seems. One might think walking on snow or riding a horse is pretty straightforward, but the sounds produced by the actions need to be made in the studio to be clear and crispy.

PlayStation Studios foley artist Joanna Fang demonstrated how the sounds in God of War Ragnarök were created using surprising everyday objects. For example, horse hooves were recreated by two toilet plungers, and broken bones were done with manicotti.

Fang also showed how charcoal turns into snow and melons make great gory viscera sounds. She also talked about more traditional equipment to produce the sound of footsteps, leather, and Atreus struggling.
