Godot Sees Major Growth In Adoption In Recent Years, Report Says
Take a closer look at engine usage, community growth, game releases, and donation increases.
Godot
If you're a regular reader of 80 Level, you've likely noticed that Godot keeps appearing more and more frequently in our coverage. That trend is also clear to us, as we continuously track industry news and developments. But do we actually have any numbers to look at?
Clay John, well known in the Godot Engine community as a Board Member of the Godot Foundation and Lead Rendering Maintainer, has recently published a write-up based on data collected up to February. In it, he looks at how Godot has grown over time and tries to give a clearer picture of its adoption trends.
Engine usage data comes from three main sources: downloads from the website or GitHub, downloads via Steam, and downloads via Google Play.

Downloads are fairly consistent at around the two million mark per release. The data also suggests users generally stick with major versions, upgrade more cautiously between them, and are more comfortable applying patch updates quickly.
Clay notes that the community growth data only reflects larger social media platforms, mainly English-speaking. Because of this, it doesn't capture growth in regions where other platforms are more widely used. The dataset also doesn't include Discord, which hosts a large and very active Godot community.

Clay also shared rough estimates of how many Godot games are being released on Steam, itch.io, and through game jams. As expected, itch.io has a much higher number of Godot games due to its lower barrier to entry, but Steam releases are also clearly growing over time. In game jams, Godot is used a lot, sometimes accounting for nearly 40% of all entries.

Godot is a free, open-source, community-driven game engine, with its development fully funded by donations.
The development fund launched in September 2023, and it's been tracked ever since. The numbers show that monthly income has stayed pretty steady overall, without much change since it started. Clay commented that the spike in December 2025 came from the fundraising campaign and that asking for donations works best, adding, "So expect to hear us asking more often."
Notably, this data does not track one-time donations.

Clay emphasized that this data comes from many different sources and is collected in various ways, which can make it somewhat disjointed. Read the full article here, and consider supporting the project via the Godot Development Fund platform.
The first beta snapshot of Godot 4.7 has just been released, and it has also been confirmed that HDR output is finally coming to the engine.
