Google Reimagines Video Calls With Realistic Holograms

Check out the recently revealed Project Starline.

Google decided to imagine where a video call gives you the ability to talk to a person on the other side of the screen who actually feels near. Their new project using 3D real-life versions of people is called Project Starline.

The project was revealed at the I/O conference. "Several years ago, we kicked off a project to use technology to explore what’s possible. We call it Project Starline. It builds on the different areas of computer science I spoke about today. It relies on custom-built hardware and highly specialized equipment. It is early and currently available in a few of our offices, but we thought it would be fun to give an early look at experiencing it for the first time," Sundar Pichai said.

A blog post says that the technology mixes advances in hardware and software to let families and friends feel together. The project is based on "research in computer vision, machine learning, spatial audio, and real-time compression." It is using a breakthrough light field display system generating a sense of volume and depth that doesn't require additional glasses or headsets.

Basically, the system creates a 3D image of the user, compresses in real-time, and sends it to a 3D display. Please note that regular smartphone and laptop displays won’t support the tech, of course.
