When ArenaNet announced Guild Wars 3, some fans were worried about the company following the popular subscription route. However, you can breathe easily: the studio head Collin Johanson promises to avoid subscriptions and battlepasses and stick to the buy-to-play system.
He addressed one big issue of modern MMOs in an IGN Live interview, saying that they often feel like "a second job," and ArenaNet wants to fix that.
"We don't have anything that's holding you hostage to keep playing and then [you can] come back when you see something cool you want to play again."
Johanson believes that the MMO genre is "stagnated," that "we've all been playing the same games for the most part for over a decade," and players are ready for something new.
We'll see if ArenaNet managed to solve this issue when Guild Wars 3 arrives in fall 2027. For now, expect to pay for the game, as it was in GW2, and for upcoming expansions.
