Handheld Camera In Armored Core V's Opening Cinematic Used Real Cameraman Mocap
Next-level detail work.
A clip has resurfaced online showing that the handheld camera footage in Armored Core V's opening cinematic was captured using a real cameraman to make it more realistic, because, of course, nothing beats real data.
The clip comes from this 4Gamer's talk by the game's production team members Takayuki Muro, Shota Hirasawa, and Shunichiro Watanabe, who explained their intention to give the game a distinctive sense of realism:
"Hirasawa's attention to detail didn't end with the scenes themselves. He believed that recreating the 'filming environment' in which the scene was likely shot was also an important factor in creating 'realistic footage.'
In other words, rather than 'beautiful CG footage' using the latest technology, Hirasawa pursued footage that looked as if it had been shot with a video camera, as if someone had actually filmed it on the spot. His attention to detail extended to the smallest details, such as deliberately using 24 frames (to recreate the film-like feel) instead of the usual 30 frames, and compressing CG footage created in HD size to SD size and then expanding it back to HD size (deliberately degrading the footage to create the feel of a handheld camera). The highlight was an episode in which they recreated footage of a motion-captured model holding a camera, creating a scene that looked like the model was trying hard to avoid camera shake."
