For Wilbert Roget, being nominated or not doesn’t matter that much because seeing so many players have enjoyed the music is already beyond his expectations.
Ten months after its turbulent start, Helldivers 2 has finally seen its review score climb up to the proudly “overwhelmingly positive.” Not surprisingly, the shooter won four nominations at this year’s upcoming The Game Award for Best Multiplayer Game, Best Ongoing Game, Best Action Game, and Best Community Support.
But there is one thing from the game that Johan Pilestedt, the boss of developer Arrowhead, believes has been underestimated — the soundtrack. He took to social media to express his love for the game’s music, as well as his surprise at its absence from The Game Award nominations:
His sentiment has been echoed by the fans, who believed that “the game would have been as much of a hit, or a hit at all” without the music, and some even have used the songs as their ringtone. But to the composer behind the game, Wilbert Roget, being nominated or not doesn’t matter that much because seeing so many players have enjoyed the music is already beyond his expectations:
“Imagine my shock at how enthusiastically players responded to HD2’s score! From music-reaction vids to covers (even a full metal album?!), I’d never been more encouraged by listeners. For a traditionally-orchestral score, what I thought was impossible came true.”
Interstingly, Roget was on the edge of giving up upon writing orchestral music for games and thinking about trying something new because it “seemed like players were getting tired of it, it’s absurdly difficult, time-consuming and expensive to produce.” Players’ love and reception for the music has “restored” his hope and passion:
“I’m profoundly grateful for the players, musicians and @ArrowheadGS devs for restoring my hope & passion for orchestral scoring. Award shows rightly have unique tastes, but knowing we’ve reached so many people is the greatest reward possible!”
Although it was not nominated at The Game Awards, the game's soundtrack received a Best Soundtrack nomination from PlayStation Blog, which is a wonderful acknowledgment that encourages the composer:
