Arrowhead's next project likely won't carry on Bitsquid's legacy.
A new job listing recently appeared on Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead Game Studios' official website, revealing that the studio is working on a brand-new, unannounced project, along with the fact that their next game will likely be powered by Epic Games' Unreal Engine.
Arrowhead
According to the vacancy in question, the team is looking for a Senior System Designer to work on their next project – presumably an entirely new IP and not Helldivers 3 – which, like Arrowhead’s 2024 blockbuster, will also be a co-op action game.
While it was evident that the studio had something cooking behind the scenes, and the listing has only confirmed the suspicion of many, what's way more interesting is that the role requires candidates to be "hands-on with Unreal Engine" and lists "strong experience with Unreal" as essential, strongly suggesting that the upcoming title will be built on Epic Games' flagship engine.
What's notable about it is that Helldivers 2, the game many credit with putting Arrowhead on the map, was powered by Bitsquid, a.k.a. Autodesk Stingray, an archaic engine discontinued in 2018 and since then maintained and upgraded by Arrowhead's tech wizards to meet the needs of their production. At the moment, the exact reason why the company's next project likely won't continue Bitsquid's legacy is unknown. We've contacted the studio to learn more about the shift and will provide an update once we receive their response.
