Hogwarts Legacy Is the Fastest-Selling Game in Europe Outside of FIFA

The game's launch sales were higher than those of any Call of Duty titles and hits like Red Dead Redemption 2.

New data from analytics firm GSD (via GamesIndustry.biz) reveals that Hogwarts Legacy has become the fastest-selling in Europe in six years outside of the FIFA franchise.

The game is now the sixth-biggest release since the European charts started six years ago. The only games that are ahead of it are FIFA titles. The Wizarding World adventure has surpassed all of the latest Call of Duty titles and hits like Red Dead Redemption 2.

In just three weeks since its release, Hogwarts Legacy has already secured a place as the fifth best-selling game of the past 12 months, outranked only by popular titles such as FIFA 23, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, GTA V, and Elden Ring.

Still, despite the tremendous success of Avalanche's RPG, total game sales in February throughout Europe have dropped by 10% in comparison to February of the previous year, with only 12.9 million games sold.

The reason for this decline was in the total number of major releases for the month which was lower than in February 2022 which saw the launch of Elden Ring, Horizon: Forbidden West, Dying Light 2 Stay Human, and Total War: Warhammer 3. Additionally, last February, Pokémon Legends: Arceus experienced robust sales during its second month of release.

As for hardware sales, PS5 sales jumped five times compared to February 2022 – Sony was able to deal with the lack of components and adjusted the supply of the console. This does not include data for the UK (information on the UK market is available in a separate report) and Germany.

In February, the PS5 secured its position as the top-selling console in Europe with a substantial lead, with its shipments doubling the sales of the Nintendo Switch, which trailed behind in second place. Nintendo's console saw a 28% decline in sales in February compared to last year. Meanwhile, Xbox Series X and Series S took No.3 place with their sales seeing a slight growth (13%).
