Hotel Barcelona: Horror Slasher with Time Looping Twist from Suda51 & Swery65

The developers shared new details about their upcoming title.

You have probably heard of Goichi Suda, a.k.a. Suda51, (Lollipop Chainsaw, Shadows of the Damned) and Hidetaka "Swery65" Suehiro (Deadly Premonition, D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die) – two developers who have definitely left a mark in the horror genre.

And they are ready to do so again with their upcoming action game Hotel Barcelona. In an interview with Xbox, the creators shared their vision of the game, the concept behind the enemies, and the fascinating time looping mechanic which might change the whole experience.

The idea behind Hotel Barcelona is simple: the protagonist will "delightfully defeat serial killers from across the United States" at the hotel using a range of cool weapons, like a huge surgical knife or a shotgun.

The hotel itself contains seven different worlds where the action takes place, each with "twisted tricks" and a serial killer boss to kill. Swery calls the bosses an "embodiment of a subgenre of horror films" that were inspired by various tropes from the subgenres such as slasher movies, zombie horror, summer camps, and babysitters.

One of the most interesting mechanics in the game is Slasher Phantom – your character from the previous run who does what you did that time to help you fight enemies. You can have up to three Slasher Phantoms to make combat as chaotic and powerful as possible.

"Each of the seven worlds consists of several areas to be cleared, and the boss appears in the last area. When you clear an area, you can choose a power-up, which may restore your health or increase your attack power. However, if you get hit and are sent back to the beginning of the area, you may find it appealing to choose a different route than the previous one, say to increase your attack power. When you do so and choose a different route, the Slasher Phantoms will reset completely."

Suda and Swery tried to combine what makes their games iconic and eventually mixed "the colors and atmosphere of Japanese animation along with the expression of shadows in a typical ’80s Hollywood horror movie."

You should be able to experience all of this soon enough: the developers say "2024 is definitely the year" for it to come to Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PS5, so stay tuned, read the interview here, and join our 80 Level Talent platform and our Telegram channel, follow us on InstagramTwitter, and LinkedIn, where we share breakdowns, the latest news, awesome artworks, and more.
