How To Fake Water Ripples & Waves Using Blender's Geometry Nodes
It's a nice and cheap effect.
AstroDemiurge VFX has published a tutorial demonstrating how to create water ripples and waves on the water surface with Geometry Nodes, without relying on shaders or other commonly used techniques.
The artist explained that the setup is essentially a heightfield wave equation solver, and the water surface displaces only downward and does not conserve volume, so it's not a true fluid sim. It's not realistic either, but it's cheap and gets the job done. AstroDemiurge VFX also plans to refine the setup and post a follow-up once they figure out how to make it feel more organic.
