How To Get Started With 3D Sketching In Blender

Yaroslav Hahalev elaborated on his technique.

Back in June, we showcased some incredible soldiers made by Concept Artist Yaroslav Hahalev, who had recently begun exploring 3D space as part of his sketching process, something he's since integrated into his professional workflow. He's now shared more insight into his approach, including how he sets up the foundation for his designs.

Yaroslav begins by blocking out the primary forms using HardOps and Boxcutter add-ons, focusing on getting the proportions and overall composition right. Once the basic silhouette is established, he continues building up the design with additional detail, again using HardOps and Boxcutter. Some elements, such as the character's face, are projected directly from his own rough concept sketches.

In the example shown, Yaroslav also used Grease Pencil to refine the details. The helmet textures were projected from the original concept and then painted over with Grease Pencil.

It'd be great to learn even more about Yaroslav's process with Grease Pencil, but for now, take a look at his 3D sketches created in Blender:
