How To Implement 3D Aiming Using Sprite Stacking In GameMaker

A tip from the creator of Rusted Moss.

Emlise, previously known as Faxdoc, the developer behind Rusted Moss, a pixel art-style, twin-stick shooter metroidvania where you use a grapple to swing across the map, has shared a brief tutorial on her experimentation with 360-degree aiming.

No, it's not a 3D model run through a pixel filter, it's a bunch of 2D images stacked on top of each other. Emlise shared that she created this effect using just GameMaker's sprite editor. With the sprite stacking method, you don't need to create separate sprites for each angle. So, if you want to change the design, like a pattern on the back of a jacket, you only have to edit the stack.
