Three-dimensional chess is still something from the realm of fantasy to me, but Beyond The Board could change my (and your) views on this complicated-looking sport.
Created by Guilherme Gama and Bruno Mascarenhas, this puzzle game takes chess to another level – literally. You control pieces to shift the environment, moving it up or down, opening new areas, and discovering powerful figures.
"During a chess match, a mysterious lightning strike disrupts the game, shattering the board and sending the pieces into unknown depths. Left with only a single Rook, you must chase the enemy King through this new three-dimensional chess realm, in order to seek answers and the rest of your party."
Each chess kingdom has a boss you need to beat. Their behaviors might be different from what you might expect, so think strategically and choose your chess crew wisely: "By revisiting previous levels with different piece combinations, players can unveil alternate endings and hidden paths in this checkered world."
The game offers diverse environments, "from snowy cliffs to dark volcanic dungeons," and mysterious abstract and liminal spaces.
Beyond The Board is created in Unity for PC. The demo should be out in May this year, and the final release is expected in July 2025.
