If You're Truly Evil in Baldur's Gate 3 You End Up Alone

Swen Vincke on choosing the evil path.

Baldur's Gate 3 is nearing its release, and fans are excited to finally put their hands on the final, full version of the game. There are a lot of new adventures to have and many dubious choices to make, and Larian Studios' founder Swen Vincke is ready to share some details.

In an interview with Mein-MMO, he discussed what can happen if you take the evil path and submit to your dark desires.

Are you usually a goody two shoes or a nefarious monster in RPG? If second, then you're apparently part of about 5% that choose the wicked road. If this is your plan for Baldur's Gate 3, Vincke recommends playing The Dark Urge (a bloodthirsty origin) and following his instincts and dark thoughts.

"You remember nothing of your past besides that you walked a path paved with blood. As you venture on, you find yourself inescapably drawn towards unimaginable cruelties. Where do these thoughts come from?" – description of The Dark Urge.

Then you can quickly get great power, but, as you might have guessed, it's connected to "something very bad." Eventually, if you follow your urges, you become unstoppable "but very lonely and end up alone."

"When you deal with people who are evil and have a lot of power, everyone wants that power. At some point you have to get rid of them all."

There are other evil characters in the game, and you can take them with you to enforce fear everywhere you go, but Vincke says you'd have to give them something and then get rid of any competition if you're really committed to your role.

"If you take a companion with you, you have to trust them up to a point. So I would kill them all. Then I would become an evil god, which is possible. I would kill anyone at the first opportunity so I don't have to deal with them."

He didn't elaborate on becoming an evil god but said you do get divine powers.

But back to the 5%. Vincke believes that giving players a choice is important, even if so few people decide to explore the less popular side. Interestingly, he doesn't look at game statistics so it doesn't influence his decisions. "We have things in there that are incredibly expensive and only 0.00001% will see them, but that's how I want the game to be."

So choose the dark path next time you play to see some rare gems.

Finally, everyone is curious why BG3 was moved to an earlier date. Vincke said that, one, the team had to decide whether to release it to all platforms at the same time, which would postpone the game that's already six years in the making. And two, we have a busy period ahead, with a lot of good games launching, including Starfiels, and "many will be screaming for attention."

"So this year we had: Zelda, Diablo, Starfield, the new Cyberpunk and we're not even at the end of October yet. If August is our month, I'm happy."

Baldur's Gate 3 will be released on August 3 for PC and September 6 for PlayStation 5.
